Writing and maintaining a blog is both creative and technical. A blogging website is an extension of your personality with all of its complexity and character. There are really no rules. How you design it and the nature of your blog will depend entirely on what you want to accomplish with it.
Some bloggers choose to express their whimsy. Some are very technical. Others like to mix it up. There are personal blogs that are journals. Blogs to promote business. Educational blogs abound. As well as, food, fashion and entertainment blogs.
There are the traditional weblogs, called blogs and video blogs, called vlogs. Vlogs are what you find on youtube.com. Then there are blogs that are primarily podcasts and some that incorporate all three.
Many bloggers have multiple blogs. Their business blog, a personal blog, and a vlog. There is no limit to what you can do. It is a medium entirely at your disposal that you create to meet your wants and needs.
7 Reasons To Start a Blog
1. It is easier than you think.
These days starting a blog is as easy as picking a website host and signing up. See my page Best Free Blog Sites. There are themes to customize your blog to have the layout you like and make it attractive. If you are thinking about starting a blog, pick a platform and do it. Do not overthink it.
If you find you prefer a different format, there are many others to choose from so there is no reason to feel stuck. Blog host hop if you want, see what suits you best. The same is also true for topics. You can change what you choose to write about.
Do not be intimidated by technology. The only way to learn it is to use it. People on the Internet with their own blogging websites do not have some special secret knowledge that you cannot acquire. They have just been doing it and learning as they go. So can you.
2. You will wish you had started blogging sooner.
Once you start blogging and get comfortable with it, you will kick yourself for not doing it long ago. The thing is when you start a blog very few people will see it. It is published, but unless you publicize it you are the only one who will be reading it. This is a great thing because you can pick and choose who to share it with as you learn.
It takes time to build a blog and get readers. Once you start becoming proficient with it, you will be eager to share it and want more readers. Then you will start wondering why you didn’t start your blog a long time ago. So get started.
3. You will gain a sense of accomplishment.
Time goes so fast and before you know it, you will have a good amount of content and a blog to be proud of. Even if you just have a little time to devote to it every day, you will be so pleased with what you achieve.
4. You will learn to be a better writer.
Writing for others is an enriching experience. It forces you to focus on others rather than yourself. I am no great writer as you can tell, but when I write my blog posts I try to think of you reading this and keep a conversational tone. I use thesuarus.com and dictionary.com often to find the best words to convey my thoughts.
I read more and spend a lot less time watching television. I am working on my writing skills with every post and I have come a long way although I have a lot to learn. When I read other blogs, I am inspired and pleasantly surprised to find the bloggers are, for the most part, like me. Learning and growing in their writing every day.
5. You will expand your interests.
Learning to blog will expose you to a world of interesting people, places, and things. People on the Internet are like you find anywhere else and most are good, kind, honest people. There are some real characters out there you will enjoy getting to know too.
I have made some very nice friends on the Internet and meet people online from all over the world. I live in Texas in the USA, but I can tell you what time it is in London, England; Lisbon, Portugal and Sydney, Australia because I have online friends there. It is so much fun to learn from them and about how they live and what they do.
6. You will learn new technical skills.
Creating a blog will teach you new online technical skills. You will learn how to create a website. How to create titles, use fonts and format. How to add pictures and use design tools. What the difference is between a page and a post and what the heck to do with a widget.
You will learn how to share your blog using social media. It is a step by step process that will be very rewarding to you. When you have questions and need help, then you will reach out to others and make new friends.
7. You will learn how to make money online.
When you create a blog and work to build it over a period of time, it is a natural part of the process to learn from what others are doing. Part of that is learning how bloggers earn money online through affiliate marketing and promoting products.
In time, you will learn how to incorporate those into your own blog if you want to do that. Making money online is another skill to learn. It is not a bad reason to start a blog if it gets you to start blogging!
There are people who blog entirely for the writing experience. There are many wonderful reasons to blog and you should. There is also a need to earn a living and many bloggers do.
Even bloggers that have personal blogs condemning the idea of blogging to earn money have blogs that earn money or use their blog to promote themselves professionally. Even the academic purists sell their books.
Start a blog. Write about your family, your pets, hobbies, your history, lessons you have learned. Find your niche. You will be so glad you did.
