Is the Gray “Mystery Man” Icon Giving You the Blues?

Create a Gravatar

How to set up a Gravatar is one of the first questions new WordPress users ask. It is free and easy to do.

An avatar is the image associated with you when you leave comments on websites and participate in forum discussions. Gravatar is a Globally Recognized Avatar.

In order to be identified with your website, you should use a Gravatar. That way when you engage online, others can recognize you and find your website through your Gravatar.

Create Your Gravatar and Link It to Your WordPress Website

Your Gravatar profile just needs to be set up once and then your image will follow you when you engage on any site that is Gravatar enabled. When someone clicks on your Gravatar your information will be provided so they can contact you and visit your website.

First, choose an image of yourself or the logo you want to be identified with and save it to your computer.

Any size image file can be uploaded to Gravatar. Large images will be automatically resized so your best quality version can be used. Gravatar will allow you to crop your image after it is uploaded.

Set up your Gravatar account, upload your image, and link it to your email address and website.

Visit Gravatar’s site and click Create Your Own Gravatar.

How to Create a Gravatar

Create your account using your existing WordPress account information or with your primary email address.

Create a Gravatar account

You will receive a confirmation email from WordPress.com, not Gravatar. You are required to click on the link in the email and then on the Activate Account button to activate your Gravatar account.

Then, you will be redirected back to WordPress.com to see a thank you message for confirming your email and you will be asked if you want to go back to Gravatar. Click the Sign into Gravatar button to log in to your Gravatar account automatically.

Click on My Gravatars in the top menu to add email accounts and upload your image.

Click on My Profile in the top menu to add your name and about me information.

Under My Profile on the right side of the screen, you will find the menu items to add a Photo Gallery, add your Websites, customize your Gravatar Background, provide Contact Information, add Verified Services (Google, Twitter, etc.), and Crypto-currencies wallet addresses.

Click on Help in the top menu for more instructions.

Add Your Website to Your Gravatar Profile

It is easy to add websites to your Gravatar profile. Your existing WordPress.com websites can be selected to feature a screenshot on your profile and links to any other websites can be added.

Click on My Profile in the top menu, then from the menu on the right sidebar, select Websites.

Click the blue “W” to select your WordPress.com websites. Click the “+” sign to add a link to any other website by entering the URL, giving it a title, and then clicking the Save Website button.

Your added websites will appear on your Gravatar Profile under your photo.

Now you are no longer a mystery!

Change the Default Gravatar in Your WordPress Website

These are the avatar settings for visitors commenting on your website.

From your WordPress Dashboard, find Settings → Discussion and scroll down to Avatars.

Avatar Display should be checked to Show Avatars. You can choose a Default Avatar for users without a custom avatar of their own with either a generic logo or a generated one based on their email address.
