One of the toughest hurdles to overcome when deciding to start a new website is what it will be about. In other words, what is my niche?
Niche marketing sounds complicated when you are new to the idea of website ownership, but it doesn’t have to be.
Basically, you need to pick a subject (a niche) to focus your website on. It should be a niche that is not too broad and not too narrow so that you can be focused, but not so limited that you will run out of material to write about and grow your website.
“If everybody is doing it one way, there’s a good chance you can find your niche by going exactly in the opposite direction.” –Sam Walton
For example, a dog niche could be about a specific breed. You would frame your website around their health, training, family compatibility, intelligence, services they can provide, how to find them, expenses and so on. Then you would sign up as an affiliate with providers such as Amazon to sell dog products on your website. One way to do that is to review products and recommend them in a blog post.
You see this every day on the websites and blogs you visit. For example, when you are looking for a new cell phone, you look up reviews for the device and a link is there to click to buy it at a good price. You appreciate that service right? I know I do. It certainly saves a hike to the Apple store.
While you are browsing the subjects below, think of them in terms of targeting a specific audience. How can you take an idea and tailor it for a group of people looking for a solution to a problem or who want to learn how? What has been lacking when you have searched the topic yourself? What experience can you add that will help others?

For more niche ideas, amazon.com is a great place to do research. Double-click ‘Shop by Department’ and dig into what interests you. What could you create a website around? There are countless affiliates to partner with, but there are bloggers that successfully review and promote Amazon products exclusively or predominately. For more, see How to Make Money with a Website.
Also, think local. Do you live in an area known for great shopping? Sports and outdoor activities? Good restaurants and entertainment? Industry with good jobs available? A college town?
To compete in the marketplace, it helps to write using targeted low competition keywords and to name your website using them. See What Is Keyword Search About?.

Hi Theresa, You never know where your next good idea will come from. I am working on a new niche site myself after researching for this list of niche ideas. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment! ~Gina
What a great list, thanks!
Hi Gina,
This is a very helpful selection of niche ideas. As you mention it is a struggle to come up with a topic. I also find it difficult to think of things to write about on a long-term basis when I have the niche.
Any suggestions on an easy way to keep coming up with ideas?
Lis.
Hi Lis, Writing regular content is its own challenge. I subscribe to many blogs in my niche and observe what is working for others and pay attention to the blogs and questions posted by members at Wealthy Affiliate. Taking notes as you have thoughts about content ideas is important. Also, there are websites like http://buzzsumo.com that are good to find topics that are trending. Thank you for your comment and question. Gina
