There are many different types of websites you can create. Which is right for you?

9 Types of Websites

Do you want to write reviews? Market services? Sell products?

What are you hoping to achieve with a website? A website’s purpose determines its structure.

Get started with the right format and the best platform which is decidedly WordPress.

With the endless combination of WordPress themes and plugins, you can create any type of website you can imagine.

The WordPress platform is the overwhelming favorite because of its adaptability.

The WordPress framework provides the ability for individuals to build their own websites without the skills of a professional developer.

9 Types of Websites

1. Blogging Websites

Blogs are a type of website updated regularly with new content like an online magazine. Learn about the difference between blog and website. A blog allows individuals to self-publish and businesses to keep clients updated.

2. Brochure / Catalog Websites

Professional websites created to describe products and services. They are popular for local businesses such as the veterinarian, hairdresser, attorney, etc.

3. Directory Websites

Directories provide categorized business listings. How long has it been since you used the Yellow Pages phone book? I can’t remember when I last cracked one open. Online directories include the online version of the Yellow Pages yp.com and others like superpages.com and yelp.com.

There are also website directories like Scrub the Web.

4. E-commerce Websites

E-Commerce websites allow shoppers to purchase directly from the seller online with the addition of a checkout system. The greatest example of an E-Commerce website is clearly amazon.com. E-Commerce websites have become increasingly popular and are easy to create with themes and plugins available specifically designed for E-Commerce.

5. Informational Websites

Informational websites are customized resources. These were the first websites to populate the Internet. Informational websites include government agencies, education, and research institutions.

6. Mobile Device Websites

Mobile websites are designed specifically for viewing on mobile devices. You can create a website with the extension .mobi to identify the domain for mobile use and help search engines find your website. Learn more about mobile device websites at dotmobi.mobi.

7. Personal Websites

Personal websites are good for journaling and sharing interests and personal photographs with family and friends. This is the type of website you would potentially create for free on wordpress.com with a sub-domain such as mywebsite.wordpress.com. It is not the type of website typically used for business.

8. Photo Sharing Websites

Photo sharing websites provide services including uploading, hosting, managing, sharing, and sometimes purchases of prints & gifts. Examples of these types of websites are instagram.com, imgur.com, flickr.com, and photobucket.com.

9. Social Media / Networking Websites

These types of websites include social media websites and forums.

Social media website examples include the top 5: facebook.com, twitter.com, linkedin.com, pinterest.com, and G+ at plus.google.com.
