A group of people looking for something.
What is a niche? A niche is a distinct segment of a market.
Niche – pertaining to or intended for a market niche; having specific appeal: niche advertising.
When you are new to website ownership, it is best to pick one niche and focus on it. It takes time and dedication to build a website. Start with one. I do not recommend taking on more than one at a time. Once you have built out your website and mastered blogging, if that is possible, then you can move on to another and maintain your first website.
Niche website subjects can be about a specific breed of pet, a particular craft, hobby, interest, skill or product. It should be something you are sincerely interested in. People sense when a blogger is truly interested in their niche. Also, you will be researching and writing quite a lot about it so it needs to be a topic you are committed to.
Ideally, your niche will be specific within a category of your interest. For example, if I were going to blog about pets, I might choose to blog about labrador retrievers. Then focus on topics related to the breed: hunting, family life, breeding, health.
Gus. The love of my Dad’s life. His yellow lab and hunting partner.
I like to make beaded jewelry. It is a niche topic I could focus on a specific element of and build a website about. Such as bead weaving stitches, Kumihimo, bead crochet, supplies for beading.

What is a Niche?
Your niche is the focus of your blog. If you are undecided about what your niche should be, try making a list of your interests. Ask your friends and family what they think you are good at. Read and subscribe to blogs you are interested in for inspiration.
Are you a natural teacher with a skill for telling and showing others how to do or make something?
If I had to sew in a zipper, I would need someone to tell me how. It might be second nature to you, but I am clueless! Same is true for fixing things. I fixed my washing machine once and did it successfully because a post on a blog told me how. I was so proud!
Maybe you have a green thumb.

Are you a good listener and have some words of wisdom that can help others?
I am not as organized as I should be and need help with time management, so I look for blogs that have constructive advice about these things. Some of us need tools. What should be obvious is unfortunately not always clear to me!
Maybe you are an avid reader and could share summaries and reviews of books you have read adding your own personal flair.
A lot of us do not have the time or maybe the drive we should to read and need help finding authors and titles to focus on for when we are looking for a new book. Online book shopping can be overwhelming and dull.
I prefer a blog focused on my reading interests. For example, I love reading about the Tudor dynasty so I look for and follow websites that are in this niche. When they recommend books, I read their reviews and often buy them.
Make Reading Fun!
Your niche is something you like and maybe even have a passion for. Helping others should be your goal.

Good article! I like the bracelet you made btw 🙂 I like to make jewelry too, but mostly I’ve just been doing really simple stuff lately with pony beads mostly, trying to get kids interested in making their own.
Hi Donna, Thank you for the kind comment! I enjoy beading. Pony beads and paracord are great for kids to learn with. My son enjoyed learning to make survival bracelets with paracord. Here is a link from Instructables: http://www.instructables.com/id/Survival-Bracelet
